Counselor’s Corner: Jeanie Nemeth

Although our day-to-day lives are often chaotic, it is beneficial to spend a little time thinking about your children’s futures. Here are two great college-savings opportunities:  Michigan Education Trust (MET) and Michigan Education Savings Program (MESP). MET is a 529 Prepaid Tuition Plan which allows for the pre-purchase of tuition based on today's rates and then paid out at the future cost when the beneficiary is in college. Click here for more information about MET, or visit https://www.michigan.gov/setwithmet.  The MESP is a college savings account that you pay into over time. By setting up automatic contributions from your bank account or by payroll deduction (if supported by your employer), making regular contributions is hassle free. MESP can be used at colleges and universities all over the country, and it allows for unused benefits to be transferred between members of the same family. Click here for more information about MESP, or visit www.misaves.com.  Both MET and MESP are simple, user-friendly, and can help maximize your savings even on a modest budget. Contributions may qualify for a state tax deduction and can be made automatically. You can even invite others to contribute to your children’s accounts through e-gifting!  As always, reach out for support and resources! I am just an email away: [email protected]

Book Fair - Parent Volunteers Needed on October 21st, 24th, and 25th

Please consider donating some of your time to help with the Book Fair. Volunteers will help students create wish lists by writing down book titles and prices. Click here to access the sign-up sheet. The book fair will open during parent teacher conferences and during Trunk or Treat. Students will come to the library to preview and create wish lists and then those with money will come on another day to purchase their items. The class that donates the most money to “All For Books” will win a pizza or sundae party. The “All for Book” money goes directly to purchasing books for student's classrooms.

Halloween Parade - 10 AM, October 31st

We will hold our annual parade at 10 AM on Monday, October 31st. Weather permitting, the parade will be outside on the service drive around the school. Families who are interested in attending the parade can line the sidewalk in front of the building at 10 AM.  If the weather does not permit for an outdoor parade, we will still hold the parade inside the building.  Parents will be invited in to observe the parade from the gym if the parade is moved indoors.

Halloween Costumes at School

To avoid needing to send students to the restroom to get dressed in their Halloween costume, we will be allowing students to wear a school appropriate Halloween costume to school on Monday, October 31st.  While students are not required to wear costumes on Halloween, those students who do wish to participate are reminded of the following guidelines:

  • No masks, no gore, no weapons, no exception. Costume accessories that are deemed dangerous or similar to weaponry are not permitted.
  • All costumes should maintain the integrity of our school dress code.
  • Do not wear face paint.
  • Hats/hoods are ok as long as they do not impede the student’s vision or identity.

Please understand that these guidelines are put in place to ensure the safety of all our students.  If a student’s costume is found to be inappropriate, she/he will be asked to remove the costume.

Trunk or Treat - October 21st, 6 - 8 PM, Three Fires Bus Lot

Our annual Trunk or Treat is scheduled for Friday, October 21st. Click here if you would like to host a trunk or donate a bag of candy for this event. Our Book Fair will be open during the Trunk or Treat. Stop into the media center if you would like!  If this event is canceled due to a weather warning/watch, parents will be sent a cancellation notice around 5:15 PM on Friday. If you are decorating your trunk and passing out treats, arrive in the bus parking lot (back lot off Latson Road) no later than 5:40 PM to park your vehicle and prepare. The entrance to the bus lot will be closed at 5:50 to ensure everyone’s safety.  All other participants should park in the main lot (front lot off Crooked Lake Road).  Participants should use the sidewalk near the playground/gym to walk and access the bus lot. All guests at our Trunk or Treat are encouraged to wear elementary appropriate costumes. Guests who plan to participate are reminded of the following guidelines:

  • No gore, no weapons, no exception.  Costume accessories that are deemed dangerous or similar to weaponry are not permitted.
  • All costumes should maintain the integrity of our school dress code.

Weekend Survival Kits™

Weekend Survival Kits™ (WSK), Giving Hope to Hungry Kids, is a supplemental food program that feeds children over the weekend when food can be uncertain for some families. This program is for elementary students at this time. A typical kit will contain approximately two weekends' worth of food servings that are discreetly sent home with students every other Friday (the second and fourth Fridays of each month) throughout the school year. The kits are free to eligible children who currently qualify for free or reduced school meals (breakfast and lunch). If you are interested in participating in the WSK program, please complete this Google Form. You only need to complete one form for your family as long as all your elementary-aged children attend the same school. If your elementary-aged children attend more than one elementary school, please complete the form for each school. Please remember that there is no cost for your family to participate. If you have questions regarding the WSK program, please contact your child's school counselor. The first kit will be sent home with registered students on Friday, October 28.
