Michigan History - Three Fires Students Advance to State Finals Again!

Last weekend, a few of our 5th grade students learned that they have advanced and are headed to the State Finals!  Students chose a topic, completed extensive research using both primary and secondary sources, wrote a process paper, thesis statement, and annotated bibliography, and then made an exhibit to display what they learned.  Please congratulate the following students for the hard work they put into their projects: Kaitlyn Curnalia, Dominik Hoeft, Melody Madden, Megan Mazurek, and Jude Starkey. Thanks to 5th grade teacher, Cheri Carroll and Blaney Bell (Student Teacher) for mentoring our students through this process!

Counselor’s Corner: Jeanie Nemeth

Sometimes it is easy for students, and adults alike, to fall into negative thinking patterns.  Being aware of this tendency can help us to challenge  and change our thoughts.  Below are a few common negative thinking patterns and tips to help make some changes.

  • Negative Filter - This happens when we put on our negative glasses that only let us see one part of what happens - the negative part.  It is also present when we practice a “positive doesn’t count” mindset - anything positive is dismissed as unimportant or else discredited.

    • Helpful tip:  Pause and list the positive things that you are not noticing. Practice will help this strategy become more natural.

  • Blowing Things Up - This includes all-or-nothing thinking, where it’s either boiling hot or freezing cold, nothing in between.  The following are examples of this type of thinking.

    • Magnifying the negative - negative events are magnified and blown out of proportion.

    • Snowballing - A single event snowballs and quickly grows into a never-ending pattern of defeat.

    • Helpful Tip: Try to keep things in perspective and recognize that it may not be as bad as you are thinking.  Talk it out with a parent/guardian, teacher, counselor or other trusted adult.

  • Predicting Failure

    • Mind reading - thoughts that we know what someone else is thinking such as, “Everyone is laughing at me.”

    • Fortune telling - when we think we know what will happen.  For example, “If I go to the sleep-over with my friend, I won’t be able to sleep.”

  • Being Hard on Ourselves - for example labeling ourselves, “I’m not smart”.  Or, blame me thoughts where we feel responsible for the negative things that happen even though we have no control over them.

    • Helpful Tip: Try to remember your strengths and think about other reasons why things happen.

  • Setting Ourselves Up to Fail -Sometimes we set very high, even impossibly high, standards for ourselves.  Expecting to be perfect and talking to ourselves in terms of “should” and “must”.

    • Revise your expectations.  Recognize what you achieve rather than focusing on what you have been unable to do.
