Vision Screening

The Livingston County Health Department provides routine vision screening to identify children who have vision problems or might be at risk for vision problems. Vision Screening is scheduled for October 27th and 28th for grades 1st, 3rd and 5th. If you do not want your child screened, or if you’d like your child screened and they are not in grades 1st, 3rd or 5th, please contact our main office at 548-6387 by Tuesday, October 26th. Children who do not pass the initial screening will be rescreened. If a child does not pass the rescreen, a letter will be mailed home recommending the child see an eye doctor for a complete eye examination.  If your student wears glasses or contacts, please remind them to wear them on the date of their screening.  Click here for more information on this program.

Halloween Parade - 10 AM, October 29th

We will hold our annual parade at 10 AM on Friday, October 29th.  Weather permitting, the parade will be outside on the service drive around the school.  Families who are interested in attending the parade can line the sidewalk in front of the building at 10 AM.  If the weather does not permit an outdoor parade, we will still hold the parade inside the building. Unfortunately, parents will not be invited in to observe the parade if the parade is moved indoors. If the parade outside is cancelled due to the weather, parents will be sent a cancellation notice around 9:15 AM on Friday.

Halloween Costumes at School

To avoid needing to send students to the restroom to get dressed in their Halloween costume, we will be allowing students to wear a school appropriate Halloween costume to school on Friday, October 29th.  While students are not required to wear costumes on Halloween, those students who do wish to participate are reminded of the following guidelines:

  • No masks, no gore, no weapons, no exception. Costume accessories that are deemed dangerous or similar to weaponry are not permitted.

  • All costumes should maintain the integrity of our school dress code.

  • Do not wear face paint.

  • Hats/hoods are ok as long as they do not impede the student’s vision or identity.

Please understand that these guidelines are put in place to ensure the safety of all our students.  If a student’s costume is found to be inappropriate, she/he will be asked to remove the costume.

What is Belly Breathing?

When you take air in through your nose, it travels into your lungs. If you take a shallow breath, only the chest cavity expands. Breathing deeply involves more of your body — the diaphragm contracts and both the belly and chest cavity expand. Belly breathing and the “fight or flight” response to stress or anxiety (two feelings we all experience) can’t occur at the same time. When our bodies switch into “fight or flight” mode, we engage in shallow breathing. We’re ready for battle. On the other hand, belly breathing reduces our heart rate and triggers a relaxation response. It slows us down.  Directions

  1. It’s best to start practicing belly breathing when you and your child are already relaxed. This way, your child can build awareness of what being calm feels like. Once your child has the feeling of belly breathing mastered (have her practice it daily), she can apply it to stressful moments.

  2. Now have your child lie on her back, relax her muscles and place her hands on her belly.

  3. With her mouth closed, have her breathe in for four seconds or until she feels her whole chest fill with air, all the way down to her belly.

  4. Have your child hold in the air for four seconds.

  5. Have your child slowly blow the air out until it’s all gone.

  6. Include belly breathing as a regular part of your child’s routine, such as bedtime. With practice, it can become a familiar strategy that your child can use at any age.
