Halloween Safety Tips

Halloween is next Tuesday, and our students will fill the streets as they head out to trick or treating. To ensure that everyone has a safe and fun Halloween night, Livingston County Sheriff Mike Murphy has released a list of Halloween Safety Tips which can be found at https://goo.gl/LdoHEP.

Counselor’s Corner:  Conversations About School

Parent involvement at school comes in so many forms - volunteering in the classroom or on field trips, supplying items for a class project or party, and attending PTO functions.  Supporting your child’s education at home is also so incredibly important!  Below are some conversation starters to help you stay involved:

  • “Let’s see what you brought home.”  Look at completed work to find out what your child is learning and to see how he or she is doing.  Feel free to comment on the work you see.  Also, respond to notes from the teacher and sign a weekly folder or daily planner if needed.

  • “Show me what you have for homework.”  Have your child explain his or her assignments to you before completing them.  This can help children review what they are supposed to be doing.  When finished, glance over the work to make sure it’s complete.

  • “Describe a book you enjoyed today.”  This lets you know what your child enjoys reading.  Start a daily reading habit by asking your child what he or she would like to read tonight.  You can work on improving reading skills by encouraging your child to read aloud to you.  Encourage listening skills by having your child listen to you read aloud.

  • “Tell me what you learned that you’d like to know more about.”  Use your child’s interests as inspiration for activities to share.  If your child likes dinosaurs, plan a visit to the local natural history museum.  If your child likes music, enroll in music lessons or go to a local concert or performance.

Also, sometimes asking “How was school today?” might not get you too far.  Instead, try using some different talking points.  Try some of these for a more vivid picture of your child’s day:

  • “What’s the coolest thing that happened today?  What wasn’t so cool?”

  • “Pretend you’re the teacher. How would you describe the day?”

  • “What made you laugh?”

  • “What was the most creative thing you did?”

  • “How were you kind or helpful today?  Was anyone kind or helpful to you?”

Enjoy those chats!
